Attitude of Prayer: What is the direction of your heart?

Prayer Focus week 36 (Sunday-Shabbat)

When you pray for the same situations day after day, you might expect that the prayers would become routine and would begin to lose meaning. While this may be true for some people, this is not our intention. A vital part of prayer is the proper frame of mind?

The mindset for prayer is referred to as kavanah (generally translated as "concentration" or "intent" or “direction of the heart”). The minimum level of kavanah is an awareness that one is speaking to God and an intention to fulfill the obligation to pray. Without this, we are not praying; we are merely reading words. Our minds need to be free from other thoughts, focus on our loving Heavenly Father, what we are praying about, and the meaning of the prayer.

Verse to memorize:  Meditate on these verses:

o    Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust (Psalm 91:1-2, NIV)

o    Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge;his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart (Psalm 91:3-4)

o    You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. (Psalm 91:5-6)

o    A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. (Ps 91:7-8)

o    If you make the Most High your dwelling – even the LORD, who is my refuge –
then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. (Ps 91:9-10)

o    For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; (Ps 91:11)

o    they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (Ps 91:12)

o   You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
 you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name. He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.” (Ps 91:13-16)
