From Generation to Generation
(In Hebrew: mi dor l’dor)
At some point in our adult lives each of us ponders what will we leave behind? What inheritance can we give our children? Our society? The world?
It is natural that we consider these things. Psalm 13:22a NASB states that “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children…”
Twenty-two years ago, as I was flying to see my father on the day of his “promotion” to heaven, the Lord gently spoke to me, “The legacy of the righteous is their faithfulness.” Financial inheritances come and go .. they’re a blessing; they are spent, but are gone quickly. However, our actions and the Godly wisdom we impart to our heirs live on.
As followers of Yeshua, we are instructed to teach our children; we are to talk about the ways of God; we are to meditate on His Word; our actions are to proclaim our faith in His Word. (Deuteronomy 11:19 NIV, also 6:7, 4:9 as well as Psalm 132:12; Proverbs 22:6; Joshua 4:22, etc)
The timelessness of the Lord’s gifts to us is brought fresh to our minds today. He has entrusted the custodianship of this beautiful Torah Scroll into our hands for a season. Eighty years ago, a generation before us commissioned this Scroll. Yes, it survived the Holocaust. Shortly after the statehood of Israel, this Scroll was bought to Israel and served a congregation in Tel Aviv for approximately 60 years. And now, we at CFS in Tucson, AZ, have the honor of caring for this Word. This Torah has gone from what many in the US call the Greatest Generation to their Baby Boomers to Generation X and to their children in Generations Y & Z.
Since the parchment and the ink were designed to last for a thousand years, we wonder what generation or who will be the ones to next care for this precious Sefer Torah. Indeed, the Word of God has gone from generation to generation (mi dor l’dor).
The oracles of God (the Torah) were committed to the priests for safe keeping. We, in turn, are committed to the safe keeping the physical Word as well and to the spiritual intent of these words by our reading and understanding of His Word. We, in turn, are we pass these truths onto our next generation.
